Receptionist - Respiratory Outpatients

The closing date is 31 July 2026.

A vacancy has arisen for a part-time receptionist (30 hours per week) in our Respiratory Outpatients Department at the Royal United Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Bath.

We are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic and proactive Receptionist with exceptional multi‑tasking and communication skills to cover a busy reception area.

The ideal candidate has good computer skills, a cheerful and proactive approach, and the ability to manage ever‑changing priorities. An approachable, professional person with exceptional organisational skills and a willingness to learn would suit this role.

Main duties

As a key member of the outpatient team, you will work at the front reception desk alongside a Healthcare Assistant, providing a welcoming, professional, and compassionate service to patients and visitors. Many of the patients attending the department may be undergoing investigations for a potential cancer diagnosis or living with a life‑limiting condition; therefore empathy, sensitivity, and excellent communication skills are essential.

Your responsibilities include managing patient information on the hospital Patient Administration System (Millennium), booking and coordinating appointments, handling telephone enquiries from patients, GPs and other healthcare professionals, arranging patient transport, and undertaking a range of administrative duties to support the smooth running of the service.

Person specification

We are looking for someone who is highly organised, customer‑focused, and able to work effectively in a busy environment. Flexibility is important, as you will be expected to provide cover for reception colleagues during periods of annual leave and unexpected absence.

Knowledge and skills
  • Computer skills – proficient use of Microsoft products (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Experience using Millennium to book appointments.
  • Previously worked in a healthcare environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and therefore requires a submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any prior convictions.
