Job Overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Specialty Doctor in Upper GI and Emergency Surgery to join our dynamic and expanding team at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. This is a full‑time post offering excellent opportunities for professional development within a supportive surgical department.
You will join a well‑established team comprising 13 Consultants, one Specialist Doctor, and one Specialty Doctor, delivering high‑quality care across Upper GI, colorectal, and emergency general surgery.
About The Department Of General SurgeryOur department provides a comprehensive general surgical service delivered by a skilled and collaborative team with a broad range of sub‑specialty interests:
- 7 Consultants – Colorectal Surgery
- 1 Consultant – Benign Gastro‑oesophageal Surgery
- 5 Consultants – Emergency Surgery (including 3 with Upper GI specialist interest and 1 with colorectal interest)
- 1 Specialist Doctor in GI Surgery
- 1 Specialty Doctor in Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery
You will be attached to the upper GI firm and take part in the on‑call rota (currently a 1 in 24). The successful applicant will be involved in service improvement and further development of our upper GI and acute services. You will be responsible to the Departmental Consultants and Clinical Lead & Specialist Surgery Directorate for the effective and efficient use of resources under your control.
You will contribute to planning the development of colorectal and general surgical services and undertake all necessary administration duties associated with the care of patients.
The work programme will be reviewed on a monthly basis and agreed with you, our Divisional Manager and Lead Clinician. Where possible a regular timetable will be established, however the nature of the post requires the post holder to be flexible in order to maximise theatre and clinic capacity. Local procedures will be followed in the event of any disagreement over proposed changes, culminating in an appeal to the Trust Board.

- 4 years of postgraduate experience
- Ability and willingness to learn from others and establish good relationships with the multidisciplinary team
You must have appropriate UK professional registration. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
