We are pleased to offer exciting opportunities for ST3-8 doctors to join our Acute Medicine Department at the Royal United Hospital. These posts provide outstanding exposure to all aspects of acute care and offer excellent learning and development opportunities within a supportive, hands‑on environment.
About the DepartmentAcute Medicine at the RUH is a dynamic and fast‑paced service centred around:
- A 13‑bedded Direct GP Assessment Area (DAA)
- A 25‑bedded Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), working closely alongside the Emergency Department
- An 18‑bedded Medical Short Stay Ward (MSS)
- A busy and expanding Ambulatory Care / Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area
Our teams provide front‑door assessment, rapid diagnostics and early treatment for patients presenting with a wide range of acute medical conditions.
Training & SupportYou will work under close day‑to‑day supervision from our Consultants in Acute Medicine and be supported by a large, experienced team that includes 15 SHOs/F2s and 1 F1. Together, this team manages the acute take Monday to Friday and provides overnight ward cover for medical patients across the hospital, supported by ward‑based teams.
This is an excellent opportunity to broaden your clinical skills, gain valuable experience across multiple acute settings, and work within a collaborative team dedicated to high‑quality patient care.
If you are enthusiastic, committed and keen to progress your career in Acute Medicine, we would be delighted to hear from you.
Main Duties of the JobEmergency admissions between 08:00 and 17:00 are managed by our Acute Physicians, with out‑of‑hours admissions overseen by a team of 24 general medical consultants, including those in Acute Medicine. Frail and elderly patients are cared for by our dedicated Frailty Flying Squad, Medical Nurse Practitioners (MNPs) and Care of the Elderly consultants. The on‑take Specialist Registrar plays a key role in coordinating and running the integrated medical 'take', working closely with the wider acute medicine team.
You will be part of a full shift rota providing comprehensive cover for both the acute medical take and inpatient wards, supported by experienced ward‑based medical teams. This structure ensures excellent clinical exposure, consistent consultant support and a strong learning environment across all areas of acute care.
