Are you an experienced analyst with a passion for environmental regulation, data-driven decision-making and regulatory compliance? We're looking for a Wastewater Regulatory Scientist to join our Flow and Level Compliance team, where you'll play a key role in delivering regulatory reporting, performance assurance and compliance insight across the business.

This is a dynamic and influential role that will see you working alongside a collaborative team of analysts and compliance specialists, applying your technical expertise to support environmental regulation and drive regulatory compliance. You'll transform complex environmental and operational data into meaningful insights that inform business decisions, support regulatory reporting and help maintain compliance with environmental legislation.

You will take ownership of regulatory data management, performance analysis and reporting activities, including live storm overflow Event Duration Monitoring (EDM) reporting. Working closely with operational teams, stakeholders and regulators, you'll investigate compliance issues, identify trends and risks, and provide expert analysis to support continuous improvement and regulatory performance.

This is a 12 month fixed term contract.

What You'llDo

As a Wastewater Regulatory Scientist, you'll provide technical and analytical support across a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • leading the day-to-day management of the MCERTS certification programme, working with the Flow Compliance Adviser to ensure inspections, records and corrective actions are delivered effectively
  • leading regulatory data returns to the Environment Agency, Ofwat and Defra, ensuring submission deadlines are met whilst maintaining accurate and reliable data
  • leading technical investigations into compliance risks, data anomalies and regulatory performance issues, making recommendations and driving corrective actions
  • acting as the technical subject matter expert for MCERTS Flow Monitoring and Event Duration Monitoring (EDM), providing specialist advice to the wider business
  • liaising with regulators on improvement plans, compliance investigations and ongoing data issues. Taking a leading role in the organisation and coordination of responses to maintenance activities which impact on regulatory data
  • leading the development and continuous improvement of corporate reporting systems to enhance regulatory reporting, data quality and business insight
  • maintaining and improving compliance processes, procedures and quality management documentation to ensure robust governance and regulatory compliance
  • supporting Regulatory Analysts through technical guidance, training and the development of procedures and working practices
  • supporting permit compliance assurance activities, including desktop audits, site visits, permit reviews and compliance improvement recommendations
  • deputising for the Flow Compliance Adviser in representing Wessex Water at industry and regulatory forums.
What You'llNeed
  • A degree-level qualification in a STEM-related subject, with a minimum of three years' experience in the water industry, environmental regulation, or a data analysis and reporting role.
  • Proven strong analytical and data management skills, with experience in managing, interpreting and reporting large datasets. Experience with EDM reporting and flow compliance data would be advantageous.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, SharePoint Online and reporting tools such as Power BI, with the ability to produce meaningful insights and dashboards.
  • Knowledge of the MCERTS certification scheme, Environmental Permitting Regulations and environmental legislation relevant to the water industry.
  • An understanding of wastewater and water supply operations, sewerage networks, and flow and level monitoring systems.
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, investigate issues and deliver accurate outputs to demanding deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the experience of communicating technical information clearly and confidently to colleagues, senior stakeholders and regulators.
  • Self-motivation and the capability to work independently, whilst contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
  • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle.
