Job Summary
The Trust is seeking to appoint a full time (10PAs) substantive Specialist Grade Clinical Microbiologist/ infectious sciences doctor. This is a new specialist grade post in line with the contract reform 2021 for SAS doctors. The post holder will have a commitment to high quality patient care, clinical governance, innovation, delivery of performance targets and excellence in training.
The post holder will be expected to liaise and develop a close working relationship with clinicians and other trust staff, encourage safe and optimal management of infection, support specialty training, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control. It is encouraged that the successful candidate will develop an area of specialist interest and take a leadership role within the team. Participate in both the workday and the out-of-hours clinical microbiology rotas is expected and the specialist grade will be part of the microbiology consultant out of hours rota.
SHH Microbiology Laboratory holds UKAS accreditation and provides comprehensive services to the population of Stockport and High Peak receiving a large and varied workload. Close working relationships with clinicians are maintained through weekly MDT meetings.

Main Duties of the Job- Provide laboratory liaison, expert microbiological and infection control advice and antimicrobial stewardship for patients, including clinical reviews as part of ward rounds.
- Provide consultant-level microbiology advice, result interpretation and authorisation, clinical liaison, and MDT attendance.
- Contribute to the out-of-hours microbiology rota.
- Share oversight of the processing of specimens in the laboratory, as well as provide reporting and clinical advice with Consultant colleagues.
- Telephone liaison and ward/department visits to discuss individual clinical cases and infection prevention and control issues within the hospital.
- Advice regarding diagnostic tests, antibiotic usage, interpretation of results, general patient management to GPs – usually telephone advice on individual patients.
- Validate and interpret laboratory test results.
- Maintain full UKAS accreditation.
- Advise and support the IPCNs in day‑to‑day activities.
- Attend Microbiology patient discussion meetings.
- Assist in ICU ward rounds.
- Participate in antibiotic stewardship rounds.
- Attend orthopaedic and diabetic foot MDT meetings.
- Attend Trust SAE and SUI meetings if required.
- Perform quality assurance performance within the department, including EQA.
