Chief Operating Officer

We are seeking an exceptional Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join our Executive Team and Board (non‑voting) at Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. The role is central to delivering high quality, equitable and sustainable services across the Trust, the BSW Hospitals Group and the wider Integrated Care System.

Main duties of the job
  • Deliver operational performance against national and local priorities.
  • Lead service transformation and redesign across clinical and corporate functions.
  • Oversee business continuity and emergency preparedness.
  • Drive delivery of Cost Improvement Programmes (CIPs).
  • Lead development and delivery of the annual and three‑year business plans.
  • Represent the Trust as a key leader within the BSW Hospitals Group and wider system, shaping and delivering shared priorities, pathways and models of care.
  • Deliver operational alignment and service optimisation across the Group, supporting consistent standards, shared workforce and efficient use of resources.
  • Champion continuous quality, efficiency and innovation.
Qualifications and experience
  • Master’s level qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience of executive leadership in a complex healthcare or similar organisation.
  • Experience leading large‑scale transformation and improvement.
  • Board experience in an Acute Trust.
  • Demonstrable experience of system leadership, partnership working and delivering outcomes across organisational boundaries.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of financial, management and clinical issues associated with an Acute Trust.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NHS performance targets, the safety agenda, financial procedures and statutory regulations.
  • Sound knowledge of corporate governance and risk management.
  • Knowledge of national NHS policy and strategy.

Salary: £100,000 to £200,000 a year, in line with experience and Band C of the VSM framework.
