Job Overview
Come and make a difference on our 31 bedded Respiratory Ward. We are looking for a Band 5 Staff nurse to join our friendly and supportive team. Our ward cares for a variety of patients with acute/chronic medical conditions, specialising in respiratory illnesses/diseases. Within the ward, we have high‑care capacity where patients require NIV/NHF to support them in their recovery or palliation of illnesses.
You will be part of our multi‑disciplinary team who are approachable and supportive and all strive to provide high standards of care to our patients. When you join us, there will be plenty of development opportunities available and our ward practice educator will support you in completing various competencies relating to Respiratory/Acute care.
- To promote a patient focused approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.
- To educate patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified.
- To provide information which enables patients to make choices about adopting a healthy lifestyle.
- To complete patient documentation to Trust standard.
- To maintain a safe ward/department environment.
- To assist in establishing and monitoring protocols/care pathways.
- To participate in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication.
- To ensure patient confidentiality.
- To assist in the development and implementation of nursing practice guidelines, standards and policies.
- To assist in the training and development of Healthcare Support Workers and complete training as required.
Job Description And Main Responsibilities
To work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse or key worker (with facilitation) for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:
- The assessment of care and health education needs;
- The development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient.
- Clinical practice
- Facilitation and teaching
- Management (as appropriate)
- Acting as a Named Nurse, to maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing.
- To co‑ordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with the RUH Discharge Policy.

- NMC Registration in Adult Nursing
- Understanding of the NMC code of conduct
- Experience in Respiratory Nursing
- Acute Hospital experience
- Is able to care for patients with various infectious diseases (e.g. covid)
- Has experience caring for patients with infectious diseases
- Is prepared to undertake further clinical competencies related to Respiratory nursing
- Is able to utilise a computer and be open to learning new electronic computer systems
- Is competent in IV, Venepuncture and cannulation
- Experience in NIV/NHF
