Overview

The Carpenter General Foreman oversees and coordinates the daily operations of civil construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and timelines. The role involves supervising crews, managing resources, and liaising with project managers and subcontractors. The General Foreman is accountable for crew performance, motivates assigned employees, and supports the immediate supervisor. The role requires understanding safety hazards related to the work and the ability to safely operate related tools and equipment.

Work may be performed in a plant operations or construction jobsite setting.

Responsibilities
  • The following are general illustrations of the work in this job class and are not all-inclusive for this position.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of civil construction crews including earthworks, concrete, drainage, storm water and structural works
  • Supervise and set direction for all Foreman and Leadmen on-site to ensure best use of company resources; ensure adherence to all company policies and state and federal regulations
  • Provide formal coaching feedback to Foreman
  • Schedule equipment, materials and tools to effectively utilize resources and maximize production while minimizing costs, after becoming familiar with scope of work and site conditions; collaborate with Civil Superintendent on all scheduled activities
  • Manage, coach, train and implement standardized work plans; assist Civil Superintendent in process improvement efforts
  • Maintain safe working conditions and safety procedures on the project, with emphasis on the specific discipline
  • Understand and enforce company, jobsite-specific, federal, and state safety regulations on site; address concerns with Civil Superintendent
  • Accountable for project construction activities and communicating expectations to craftsmen, subcontractors and vendors
  • Maintain records of labor and equipment production and compare to the estimate
  • Communicate with the Civil Superintendent regarding cost overruns and utilization of company resources
  • Mentor Foremen on work discipline such as production costs, scope of work, quality, and safety
  • Maintain and update crew and equipment matrices
  • Hold crew members and foremen accountable for company and project rules
  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures and Best Practices are followed
  • Familiarity with mix designs and the curing process for concrete
  • Conduct weekly/quarterly safety and quality audits
  • Advance knowledge of the QC process as it pertains to the checkout process
  • Receive permits to support the work being performed
Qualifications Physical
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs., may occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Hearing and comprehension necessary for giving and receiving directions
  • Perform sedentary to heavy work
  • Operate office equipment of all types
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel/wood framework, stairs, ladders and scaffolds
  • Use hands to grasp, lift, handle, carry or feel objects on a frequent basis
  • Prolonged bending/twisting, walking, reaching overhead, squatting, sitting or standing and lifting may be required
  • Navigate uneven terrain, ladders, and multi-floor buildings with no elevator
  • Walk on uneven surfaces, muddy conditions, loose rock, and loose/soft sand
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.)
  • Vision requirements include close and distance vision and ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to drive cars/trucks as needed

  • Ability to communicate effectively with management/supervision and field workers
  • Reading and writing comprehension necessary for directions, safety policy
  • Ability to use math and perform calculations
  • Work at various tempos and concentrate amid distractions
