The Episcopal School of Baton Rouge seeks a creative and engaging Middle School Science Teacher for the academic year to work with 8th-grade students. The Middle School Science Teacher is an integral part of the Middle School and the Science Department, a team of educators that embraces the whole-child educational philosophy and seeks to help students develop the skills and knowledge to understand the world around them.
The Middle School Science Teacher will teach 8th-grade Physical Science and 8th-grade Computer Science. This position is a ten-month full-time position with an annual renewal. The position begins August 1st and is renewed annually.
- Teach 8th-grade Physical Science and Computer Science courses with a focus on helping students develop a strong conceptual understanding of the content, critical thinking, and analytical skills, as well as an understanding of science as a process.
- Provide engaging and effective instruction that is student-centered, meets students where they are, and incorporates a variety of instructional methods with an emphasis on inquiry, hands‑on labs, and project-based learning and educational technology.
- Develop lessons that use longer class periods effectively, incorporating multiple learning activities in each lesson.
- Evaluate student learning through a variety of assessments, including formative assessments, to be in tune with students’ progress and communicate that progress to administrators, students, and families.
- Collaborate with other members of the Science Department to ensure proper vertical and horizontal alignment and to meet current and future student needs.
- Collaborate with other Middle School faculty to develop cross‑curricular connections.
- Attend scheduled faculty/division/department meetings.
- Participate in professional development.
- Perform additional faculty duties, including, but not limited to, being a Middle School advisor and supervising students during carpool, lunch, recess, and so forth.
- A Bachelor’s Degree in a physical science field or certification to teach science at the secondary level is required.
- Ability to meet the learning needs of students through differentiated instruction.
- Creativity in lesson design that balances content, skill, and student self‑direction through the use of a variety of instructional methods that include project‑based instruction and inquiry.
- Appreciation for and understanding of Middle School‑aged students and an ability to develop positive relationships with students.
- Excellent classroom management skills that promote a positive classroom environment.
- Familiarity with technology or ability and desire to learn about technology for lesson design, lesson implementation, and recording student progress. Familiarity with using iPads in the classroom setting is a plus.
- An ability to communicate clearly and with appropriate empathy to students, parents, and colleagues.
- Collaborative spirit when working with colleagues across grade levels and departments.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Embraces the whole‑child educational philosophy and seeks to help students develop in all aspects.
