The Louisiana Special Schools are experiencing a critical shortage of certified teachers, school counselors, interpreters and educators of the Deaf or hard of hearing and Visually Impaired. The LA SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT is seeking applicants for a Para educator, Position #180857. This is a full-time 9 months and 8 hours per day position (Salary is paid over a 12-month period).
To be filled for the school year.
- Our para educators are paraprofessional teaching assistants working with children who have moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, autism, deafness, and blindness.
- Support rigorous instruction in inclusive classrooms with core instruction or career and technical instruction, or in self-contained settings in areas such as transition, math, and literacy.
- Aim to prepare scholars for transition to rigorous post-secondary outcomes, tailored to each student.
- Provide individualized instruction and small group instruction as needed throughout the day.
- Track progress for scholars on skills outlined in their IEPs and behavior plans; work with the Teacher to ensure data is accurately entered in a timely fashion.
- Support scholars with toileting as needed, including assistance with daily routines and hygiene as appropriate.
- Foster positive rapport and relationships with students; create an enthusiastic and optimistic learning environment.
- Communicate frequently with parents to support scholar success.
- Participate in school activities, committees, and events that promote school identity and culture.
- Perform clerical duties related to textbooks, instructional supplies, student reports and records, and attendance as required.
- High school diploma and passing score on Para Pro assessment.
- Sign Language Proficiency - Intermediate Plus level preferred (2 years to achieve).
- Desire to work at a college-prep high school and with scholars who have the greatest need and growth potential.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and personal initiative to pursue excellence.
- Belief that all students can succeed in college and beyond; responsibility to help students realize that potential.
- Ability to participate in all school activities, extracurriculars, and events that promote school identity and culture.
- Effective rating through evaluation tools and conduct rubrics.
