Helix Mentorship and Maritime Academy is a public charter high school in the Helix Community Schools network, located in the heart of downtown Baton Rouge. As we transition into a maritime-focused academy, our mission is to blend rigorous academics with hands‑on, real‑world learning experiences. We are dedicated to preparing students for college, careers, and civic life through relevant, innovative, and culturally responsive instruction.
Position OverviewWe are seeking a passionate, student‑centered 11th Grade Chemistry Teacher to join our instructional team for the school year. The ideal candidate will bring deep content knowledge, a commitment to equity, and the ability to make chemistry meaningful by connecting it to maritime and real‑world applications.
Key ResponsibilitiesDeliver high‑quality, standards‑based Chemistry instruction to 11th‑grade students
Design and implement engaging, inquiry‑based labs and hands‑on learning experiences
Connect core chemistry content to maritime, environmental, and real‑world contexts
Foster a safe, structured, and academically focused classroom environment
Use assessment data to differentiate instruction and meet the diverse needs of learners
Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects and school‑wide initiatives
Maintain consistent communication with families to support student growth
All HMMA teachers are expected to sponsor at least one club or Enrichment block as part of their full‑time role (not eligible for additional compensation)
As a Verizon Innovative Learning School (VILS), teachers are expected to integrate technology effectively and support digital equity for all students
Active participation in professional learning communities and a commitment to continuous improvement are essential
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Science Education, or a related field (required)
Louisiana teaching certification in Chemistry or eligibility to obtain certification (preferred)
High school teaching experience strongly preferred
Strong classroom management, planning, and relationship‑building skills
Demonstrated ability to use technology and culturally responsive teaching practices
Commitment to educational equity and a growth mindset
