Genomics Core Director, Associate/Full Professor
At the forefront of medical discovery as it relates to understanding the causes of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia, Pennington Biomedical Research Center is a campus of Louisiana State University and conducts basic, clinical and population research. The Center includes Basic Science, Clinical Research, and Population and Public Health, enabling focused research and translational science. Research is supported by multiple NIH Research Centers and includes approximately 65 faculty and 20 postdoctoral fellows who comprise a network of 44 laboratories and 13 highly specialized core service facilities.
Pennington Biomedical is located within state‑of‑the‑art research facilities on a 222‑acre campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The Genomics Core is a longstanding, NIH‑supported facility that advances the broad scientific goals of Pennington Biomedical Research Center. The Director oversees the comprehensive operation of the core facility while maintaining an independent research program. The role carries a faculty rank of either Associate Professor or Professor, with the option for tenure/tenure‑track, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Major Responsibilities- Maintain an active research program that aligns with Pennington Biomedical's mission in obesity, metabolism, and nutrition.
- Develop and implement new genomic technologies and methodologies to support evolving research needs.
- Consult faculty and research staff on experimental design, methodology selection, data quality assessment, and implementation of new genomic technologies.
- Participate in current center awards, specifically the NORC & COBRE grants.
- Collaborate with other core facilities (Cell Biology & Bioimaging Core, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Core) to provide integrated genomic services.
- Oversee day‑to‑day operations, review protocols, and improve efficiency while maintaining high‑quality services.
- Oversee quality control programs for all genomic services, establish and maintain SOPs.
- Manage Genomics Core staff, including hiring, training, career development, and performance evaluations.
- Oversee fiscal operations, prepare budget requests, manage service fees, and work on equipment and supply purchases.
- Ensure compliance with institutional and federal regulations regarding genomic research, data management, and biosafety protocols.
- Maintain emergency plans for operations and data management, including backup and recovery procedures.
- PhD, MD, or equivalent in genomics, molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, or related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in a genomics core facility or comparable environment.
- Proven ability to design, implement, and manage large‑scale genomics projects.
- Demonstrated success in leading multidisciplinary teams, providing technical and scientific direction, and mentoring faculty, staff, and trainees.
- Established record of peer‑reviewed publications in genomics, precision health, or related biomedical fields.
- Experience securing and managing extramural funding (e.g., NIH R01).
- Ability to collaborate with investigators across diverse research areas.
- Ability to develop and implement strategic plans to expand the Genomics Core's research capacity.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative leadership skills, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive and innovative research environment.
- Experience managing budgets, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring regulatory compliance (e.g., data security and ethical guidelines).
