Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist – PRN

Join Oceans Healthcare in this Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) role. The CTRS provides assessment, individualized intervention planning, treatment planning, and group therapy to support patient/family/group progress in treatment at Oceans Behavioral Hospital Baton Rouge.

Essential Functions
  • Provides direct therapeutic recreation therapy services in accordance with accepted standards and regulations.
  • Plans and conducts individual and group therapy as assigned by physician’s order.
  • Completes all necessary paperwork/documents within 72 hours of admission, including comprehensive assessments and multidisciplinary treatment integration.
  • Performs chart audits of recreational activities provided to patients.
  • Participates as an active member of the treatment team, attending meetings and reporting on assigned patients.
  • Documents services rendered in a timely manner in the medical record.
  • Communicates in an age/ disability/ culturally sensitive manner, identifying safety, psychosocial, special mobility and special equipment needs.
  • Conducts treatments and discharge planning following cultural and developmental considerations, involving the patient’s support system as appropriate.
  • Develops and provides in‑services for inter/intra‑community staff on a minimum of a bi‑annual basis.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and active CTRS license; maintain yearly certification. Prefer three (3) years experience in inpatient acute care and one year supervisory experience.

Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles, mental illness, chemical dependency, family dynamics, and various patient populations. Proficient in clinical therapy modalities, communication, group/process skills, and cultural sensitivity.

Must have basic knowledge of chronic mental illness, excellent time management, organization skills, and ability to coordinate a multi‑faced workload. Must work under close supervision and complete CPR certification and an Oceans approved behavioral de‑escalation program.

Work may involve interruptions, high pace, and stressful situations. The position requires spending approximately 90% or more of the time inside a building that offers protection from weather but not necessarily from temperature changes.
