OverviewInvestigates, evaluates, and proactively manages assigned claims of variable complexity through final disposition. Investigates coverage and compensability issues. Handles lost time claims, including high IWIS claims, high exposure claims, and claims for assigned special accounts. Holds increased reserve and settlement authority limits. Manages medical case management, litigation management, return to work, and settlement where necessary. Serves as a resource and mentor to department members.
Uses technology and systems for claim management, document management, utilization review, and pharmacy management. Claims are handled independently under general direction according to established policies, procedures, and precedents.
- Serve as dedicated claims representative for special customer service requirements on assigned accounts.
- Proactively manage litigated claims with in-house or outside counsel, focusing on timely resolution and/or settlement.
- Evaluate and settle all claims within increased authority limits; present claims exceeding limits to the executive claims committee.
- Investigate coverage, compensability, subrogation, and second injury fund potential; resolve unique coverage issues involving multiple carriers or employer liability exposure.
- Manage occupational disease claims and other extraordinary claim issues, including high IWIS and high exposure claims.
- Maintain a personal caseload to mitigate exposure within controllable cost objectives.
- Develop cost containment strategies for large claims and recommend productive case outcomes.
- Document claim files according to quality review standards and complete reinsurance reporting on high exposure claims.
- Conduct work with integrity, confidentiality, and a strong sense of responsibility.
- Investigate larger, more complex workers’ compensation claims using sound claims handling techniques aligned with company philosophy and quality assurance standards.
- Establish and maintain appropriate file reserves with increased authority limits in line with company reserving procedures.
- Communicate continuously with injured workers, medical providers, plaintiff attorneys, defense attorneys, policyholders, and agents, promptly resolving complaints or claim problems.
- Act as a resource and mentor to less experienced claims representatives.

- Education
- Bachelor’s degree and four years of workers’ compensation claims experience, OR high school diploma/GED with eight years of insurance claims experience, including four years in workers’ compensation.
- Active Louisiana Workers' Compensation Adjuster License required prior to start or obtained within seven (7) business days after start date.
- Experience
- Minimum of two years as a Claims Representative strongly preferred.
- CPCU, ARM, AIC preferred.
