Founded in 1975, American Youth Works (AYW) connects young adults to education, paid career training, and support services through Conservation Corps programs in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and Youth Build Pre‑Apprenticeship programs in Austin and Taylor, TX. The American Youth Works – Louisiana Conservation Corps (AYW LaCC) is looking to fill Gulf Corps Crew Leader and Member openings for the term year!
AYW Conservation Corps is a part of the Gulf Corps Initiative – For the upcoming season we are looking for dedicated young adults to work with us! LaCC provides members with hands‑on opportunities, extensive training in conservation and coastal restoration, and the freedom to develop personally and professionally.
The LaCC Gulf Corps program is based out of Baton Rouge, LA and aims to empower young people through conservation, education, service, and job training. Participants engage in hands‑on projects on public lands, coastal regions, and occasionally in disaster areas.
In this program the primary focus is gulf and coastal restoration with the potential to conduct prescribed burns. Crews will receive training and education on how prescribed burns impact the environment with Wildland Fire Trainings. There are also structured professional development for future career expansion and exploration after the gulf corps program!

COMPENSATION (Monthly Living Allowance):
- Crew Leaders: $2,720 per month ($1,360 biweekly)
- Crew Members: $2,400 per month ($1,200 biweekly)
AMERICORPS TERM LENGTHS
(Baton Rouge, LA (900 hours))
- CPR & Wilderness Advanced First Aid Certification
- Technical & fundamental skills training
- Gulf Corps training
- S212 training (depending on projects)
- Wildland Firefighter training (depending on projects)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Frequently required to walk and hike over long distances while carrying tools
- Ability to operate tools
- Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 35-50 pounds (depending on crew type)
- Walking and working on steep or uneven terrain
- Ability to work long days in adverse weather conditions
- Depending on crew type, ability to hitch, camp, and travel throughout the duration of an entire Ameri Corps term
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED
- Between the ages of 18-35;
Ages 21+ for Crew Leaders - US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
- Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check (NSCHC)
- Additional experience and qualifications for Crew Leaders
- Clean 3-year Driving Record
- 3-5 months of previous conservation experience (e.g., chainsaws, habitat restoration, invasive species removal, trail work)
- Able to work independently and with a crew while having a safety mindset
