Forester | Ecologist | Assistant Professor of Forestry at Louisiana State University

A Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Research Assistantship (RA) is available in the School of Renewable Natural Resources (RNR) at Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA) under the supervision of Dr. John Tracy. The RA will develop and lead research projects related to assessing the functions of natural and restored bottom land hardwood (BLH) forest ecosystems in the southeastern United States.

This includes studying the impact of biotic and abiotic stressors on BLH forest species and investigating management alternatives that maximize BLH forest services. Focus should be applied to functions and services valued by modern forest markets and conservation easement programs (e.g., carbon storage, biogeochemical cycling, timber, wildlife).

The RA will be encouraged to utilize remote sensing applications, field-based studies, controlled experiments, and other methodologies. Opportunities exist to collaborate with faculty in the LSU AgCenter, other universities, state and federal agencies, and private landowners.

Applicants must hold a B.S. in Forestry or a related field and meet LSU Graduate School admission requirements. They should have strong quantitative skills and knowledge of forest ecology. The candidate should exhibit good communication skills, with expectations to publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present or experience with remote sensing, GIS, statistical analysis (R/Python), experimental design, forest inventory, soil assays, and data management is preferred.

To apply, submit via email to Dr. John Tracy (jtracy.edu):

  • Statement of research interests and career goals
  • Contact information for three references

Financial support is available for 2 years (M.S.) or 4 years (Ph.D.), starting Spring 2026, including a stipend, tuition, and health insurance. Application review begins September 1, 2025, and continues until a suitable candidate is found. Questions can be directed to Dr. Tracy .
