Summary

The successful candidate will primarily assist with the needs of medically fragile elementary students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Observe student on an ongoing basis to detect health needs.
  • Regular and dependable attendance is a critical performance factor to ensure high quality service to the student.
  • Supervise the drinking and gastronomy tube feeding as directed in the health plan.
  • Administer medication and treatment prescribed by physicians.
  • Support communication needs of the student.
  • Sterilize equipment and supplies.
  • Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
  • Attend meetings, if necessary, to update/plan treatments needed at school.
  • Model the use of universal precautions.
  • Provide instructional support as supervised by teachers.
  • Adhere to district health and safety procedures.
  • Adhere to Board Policies and Guidelines.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Engage in non-violent crisis intervention (CPI training will be provided as necessary).
  • Monitor hall for student safety during passing time.

Skills and Qualifications

Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and school community. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Must demonstrate a willingness to accept new para educator pertinent job responsibilities when they are assigned. Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

REQUIRED Education/Experience
  • Minimum education of high school diploma or GED is required.
  • It is required that the candidate complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 semester hours); or obtain an associate's degree (or higher); or a passing score of 460 on the ETS Parapro Assessment; or a passing score on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification-Professional Readiness (Basic Skills) Exam.
  • Demonstrated experience working with At-Risk and/or special education students.
This position includes
  • Possible tuition assistance for teacher certification program.
  • Hourly Rate: $16.00 - $19.75/hour plus $1.00 premium pay.
  • Up to 6.83 hours per day with a 30 minute duty free lunch (6.53 paid hours/day).
  • Personal and sick leave benefits.
Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud. The employee is frequently exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person due to the close contact with students. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
