Job Overview

Performs radiographic examinations of various anatomical parts and systems of the body in order to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of physical injuries or medical disorders. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Job Requirements
  • Minimum of one of the following:
    Certificate of Completion of a hospital base program or Associate’s degree from an accredited school of Radiology Technology.
  • Registered ARRT required or registry eligible. Registry eligible technologist must receive registry within 6 months of hire date.
  • Must successfully complete BLS training course within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be able to operate basic computer programs associated with record keeping in the department.
  • Must demonstrate excellent human relation skills for dealing with patients, providers, and other staff in sometimes difficult or sensitive situations.
  • Must have a customer service orientation.
  • Must demonstrate leadership and organization skills, including the ability to work independently and take initiative within established procedures.
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude.
Responsibilities
  • Works on a rotational basis in several areas of the radiology department performing routine radiology examinations as well as more advanced diagnostic procedures (fluoroscopy, joint injections, lumbar/myelogram exams).
  • Receives or escorts patients into examination area, reviews pertinent patient information, and instructs patient concerning the examination to be performed. Assists provider with procedures.
  • Positions patients to obtain and effect the results specified for diagnoses; sets up and adjusts supportive and immobilization devices as necessary; applies and adjusts radiation protective shielding as needed.
  • Operates diagnostic radiographic equipment to provide optimal examinations in accordance with physician orders. Consults radiologist to clarify orders or discuss unusual situations. Performs work in the radiology department or other areas as necessary to accommodate patient/provider needs.
  • Operates all equipment properly and with care and reports any malfunctions, necessary adjustments, or repairs immediately.
  • Assists providers in administering prescribed radiolucent or radiopaque media for examinations.
  • Performs first aid as required and assists in cases of adverse reaction to contrast media or during other emergencies.
  • Observes and practices sterile technique.
  • Maintains cleanliness of procedure rooms and equipment.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of patient and file information.
  • Maintains appropriate supply level in the area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates or oversees on‑job training for student technologists and other non‑professional assistants as assigned.
Physical & Job Conditions
  • Work produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods.
  • Operation of a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70% of the time.
  • Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of lightweight objects (≤20 pounds) and assisting with heavier tasks such as patient lifting (50 pounds or more). Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed.
