Application Requirements

Only apply if you are currently enrolled and/or attending a police academy, have graduated from an accredited police academy, or have current or previous law enforcement work experience. Individuals seeking sponsorship to attend a police academy should apply to the Police Recruit position.

All required documentation must be completed and turned in before an interview can be scheduled.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol an assigned area on foot or in a radio‑equipped cruiser to prevent crime and disorder, protect life and property, direct traffic, investigate accidents, and enforce motor vehicle operations and parking regulations.
  • Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints; explain and enforce applicable state and local laws and ordinances.
  • Investigate suspicious activities; interview witnesses, victims, and suspects to obtain necessary information regarding crimes, accidents, violations, etc.; conduct searches; apprehend and arrest violators of the law.
  • Serve criminal processes including warrants and subpoenas.
  • Write and issue tickets for infractions such as parking, traffic, and ordinance violations.
  • Restore order when called to the scene of traffic accidents or other emergencies.
  • Assist elderly and ill people, give first aid, and locate missing persons and lost children; guard prisoners and assume responsibility for their safety and personal property while in custody.
  • Keep records and make reports of accidents, complaints, criminal offenses, and other incidents.
  • Provide information and assistance to the general public.
  • Obtain and preserve evidence, testify in court, and otherwise assist in the prosecution of criminal cases.
  • Ensure vehicle is properly maintained and perform vehicle inspections; maintain individual equipment.
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies when requested or assigned.
  • May be assigned to investigation, crime lab, narcotics, gang, emergency response team, community service, or other technical or special support operations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be nineteen (19) years of age on date of appointment.
  • Associate’s degree with coursework in criminal justice or related field, or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Licensed as a police officer with an "Active" or "Inactive" status as set by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), OR licensed in another state with an equivalent status and subject to meeting MCOLES' licensing requirements. 1–3 or more years’ experience as an MCOLES licensed law enforcement officer.
  • Honorably discharged veterans from the U.S. Armed Forces must supply a copy of their DD‑214.
Special Requirements
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Legally able to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on an overtime basis.
  • Candidates with no prior law enforcement experience or certification are eligible to apply for the Police Recruit position.
