This regular, full-time, administrative position will work Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, with flexible or extended hours during peak times, as needed by the College or department.

Position Summary

The Police Officer assists in operations and control daily of public safety management at five separate campus locations employing a blended force of three (3) sworn officers and 12 contract security guards to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff of the College and those of the institutional tenants. Responsible for enforcing all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances as well as develops, implements, and enforces institutional policies and procedures that ensure a safe, secure, and comfortable environment conducive to a quality educational experience.

Responsible for the ensuring the timely reporting of all crimes, incidents, and injuries. Coordinates with local law enforcement entities for mutual aid support and exercises. Serves as the institutional on-scene representative during critical incidents.

Kellogg Community College is located in Battle Creek, Michigan, a community of approximately 54,000 people. Located along the I-94 interstate, Battle Creek is within 30 minutes of Kalamazoo, 60 minutes of Lansing and Grand Rapids and within three hours of Detroit, Chicago and Indianapolis.

Physical Demands

The job responsibilities are performed in office areas, presentation venues, and outside locations at various locations. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, running, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, dexterity (grasping, holding), lifting (some of which may be heavy or awkward (50+ pounds)). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration, including reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, tactile sensation for detection, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, talking, and smelling.

Interaction includes contact with the general public and working alone. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates degree (AA, AS) or equivalent in Law Enforcement and Public Safety;
    Public Service Administration, obtained from an accredited college or university.
  • Currently MCOLES certified or licensable as a police officer as defined by MCOLES at time of hire.
  • One to three (1-3) years of law enforcement experience.
  • Valid State of Michigan driver's license with an acceptable traffic record.
  • Specific training in mental health awareness for public safety professionals and de-escalation must be completed within first year of employment and annually after that to remain employed.
Preferred but not Required
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office or other similar software suite.
  • Trained and certified in Title IX.
  • Five to seven (5-7) years of law enforcement experience.
Proposed Salary

According to the Kellogg Community College Hay Administrative Compensation program, the  hourly rate range for a Professional 1 non-exempt position, $24.32 to $28.61 per hour to start.
