SUMMARY

The Product Design and Development Engineer I is responsible for designing and developing accurate system applications by selecting appropriate components to meet customer and product requirements. This role supports new product development and sustaining engineering activities while collaborating with senior engineers and cross‑functional teams. This position is part of McCartney Engineering, a business unit of Shape Technologies Group.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Analyze and interpret customer specifications and internal design requirements
  • Design mechanical systems and product configurations that meet functional, performance, and quality standards
  • Perform basic to intermediate engineering calculations and design analysis under established guidelines
  • Create, update, and maintain engineering drawings, models, and documentation
  • Participate in peer reviews of engineering changes and technical documents
  • Support sustaining engineering activities, including design updates, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement
  • Assist with factory acceptance testing (FAT), validation, and system performance verification
  • Research and evaluate components for current designs and future product development
  • Collect, analyze, and document test data for new or modified components
  • Create and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) and related documentation
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and sales teams
  • Support and follow established engineering standards, processes, and best practices
  • Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
  • Strong attention to detail with demonstrated organization and planning skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical and non‑technical information to individuals and groups
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design principles and engineering analysis methods
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and drafting software (Solid Works preferred)
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD or equivalent drafting software
  • Ability to create, maintain, and interpret engineering drawings and documentation
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Understanding of bills of materials (BOMs) and part documentation
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team
  • Results‑driven mindset with the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines
  • Adaptable and flexible, with the ability to respond to changing priorities
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology is required or equivalent combination of education and experience (typically 5–7 years of related mechanical engineering experience)
  • Experience supporting product design, system development, or sustaining engineering preferred
  • Experience with component selection, testing, and validation preferred
  • Familiarity with industrial equipment or engineered systems is a plus
