Position Overview

The Novelis North America Bay Minette Technical team is looking for Lab Technicians to be located at our new facility in Bay Minette, Alabama. The Laboratory Technician will ensure the quality of aluminum products meet their requirements by conducting process and product testing. They will be responsible for the daily operations of the labs by guiding the lab team, supporting the setup of lab equipment (maintenance and calibration), monitoring lab consumable inventory, reviewing and analyzing test results, supporting qualification trials, and assisting in root cause investigation on customer claims.

Responsibilities

  • Be a role model for safety; demonstrating behaviors that align with the Novelis Safety Absolutes and Safety Principles to build a zero‑injury culture.
  • Ensure personal safety and physical and mental well‑being, as well as that of colleagues and visitors in their area of expertise; use mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and guide others in its use.
  • Preserve the environment and align with legal environmental requirements established in ISO and other specific standards.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Lab Leader and logistics to prioritize daily activities, arrange lab technicians' shift schedules, and meet shipping and production needs.
  • Perform mechanical and metallography tests, provide finished product certifications, use microscopes and software for analysis, and drive root‑cause analysis initiatives to improve quality processes and products.
  • Conduct statistical analysis of lab data for validation, review and monitor test result accuracy and trends, and investigate anomalous results.
  • Analyze new and in‑process mill coolants and cleaning section chemicals, and communicate test results to process areas.
  • Install and set up new equipment, develop work instructions, maintain lab instruments, and ensure maintenance and calibration records are up‑to‑date.
  • Train staff and cross‑train lab technicians, maintain training records, perform layered process audits, and ensure management of change documentation is recorded.
  • Provide technical support for customer claims, trials, qualifications, and product development projects, perform cross‑checks with other Novelis plants, and ensure consistency and best processes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An Associate’s degree in a science, pre‑engineering, or laboratory science field required, in excess of five years of manufacturing laboratory experience can be substituted for a degree.
  • 2+ years of experience in an industrial manufacturing laboratory setting preferred.
  • Experience in customer interface work.
  • Basic computer and math skills are required.
  • Ability to work as scheduled (including overtime, weekends and holidays) to support our 24/7 operations.
  • Strong data analysis and problem‑solving skills, ability to design testing experiments, collect, analyze and present the results proactively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, physics, or equivalent experience.
  • Metallurgy coursework or certificate.
  • Quality audit experience.
  • Experience with tensile, scanning electron microscope (SEM), metallography, spectrometer, hardness, roughness, titration, x‑ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP‑OES).
  • Experience in using laboratory testing and tools to evaluate metal surfaces and interacting surfaces, along with techniques such as basic chemistry, microscopy, and other surface characterization and metallographic methods.
