Position OverviewUnder the direction of the Health and Safety Manager, the Safety Representative provides technical and compliance expertise to field employees regarding safe work habits. The role works closely with field supervision and personnel to promote safe practices and achieve company safety goals.
Key Responsibilities- Assist with audits of plant facilities regulated under OSHA, General Industry and Construction Standards.
- Investigate all incidents for root‑cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
- Participate in safety committee meetings and provide resources on committee concerns and corrective actions.
- Reinforce safety policies and procedures that support company goals and operational needs.
- Teach Smith System defensive driving course to employees authorized to drive company vehicles.
- Conduct employee training certifications, classroom training, and practical hands‑on training.
- Conduct job‑site safety inspections for fire‑prevention equipment and other safety and first‑aid supplies.
- Assist in weekly toolbox talks and monthly safety training sessions.
- Assist with plant and roadway incident investigations, documenting all accidents, violations, injuries and unsafe conditions to identify root causes and recommend improvements.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to ensure timely employee corrective actions.
- Observe workers to ensure use of prescribed safety equipment.
- Provide health and safety support to the Safety Manager.
- Assist with the Safety Mentor program for new employees; assign and maintain eLearning training.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Safety Manager.
- Travel overnight as required.
- Work weekend on‑call once a month.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education/Experience
- At least 1–2 years of construction and/or industrial safety experience.
- Thorough understanding of and ability to enforce all federal, state, local and company regulations.
Work Requirements
Must have a valid, state‑issued driver’s license. Must be able to obtain a TWIC card and all ISTC certifications required for the position.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Bilingual preferred (Spanish).
- Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures.
- Solid training/teaching experience.
- High ethical standards.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Can orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously.
- Ability to use resources effectively and arrange information in a useful manner.
- A strong advocate for the company’s safety slogan of SEE, STOP, DO.
- Communicate by telephone and in person.
- Utilize a computer and iPad for word processing, e‑mail and document preparation.
- Knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Intermittent climbing, bending, squatting and kneeling.
- Periodic extensive walking and standing.
- Drive a vehicle and walk uneven terrain.
- Lift up to 40 lbs. periodically.
- May be exposed to extreme hot, cold and wet weather.
