Overview
Are you passionate about environmental conservation and eager to make a difference? Join our team as a Wetlands Education Technician. As a key advocate for wetland ecosystems, you will engage with the community, deliver educational programs, and contribute to preserving natural resources. This is a year-round, part-time position at the Wetlands Center.
Responsibilities- Teach education programs, including camps and outreach activities, and lead outdoor education activities (e.g., seining, birdwatching, fishing, water testing).
- Feed and care for live animals and aquaria containing fresh water, estuarine, or marine species.
- Provide light computer support and assist with curriculum development for new programs.
- Represent the Wetlands Center at outreach events and assist with special events (e.g., July Fourth Celebration).
- Assist with animal care, including feeding and cleaning of habitats, and handle animals as required for education programs.
- Required:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Actively pursuing, or completed, an education in science, education, biology, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Enjoy working with children and adults.
- Ability to work weekends, evenings, and/or overnight travel as needed.
- One year of related experience in Education, Biology, Nature Centers, or a related field.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish.
An interest in birding, fishing, plant identification, wetland ecology, and woods ecology is helpful. A basic knowledge of nature and the ability to create environmental education programs for all ages are desired. Ability to communicate with the public, especially children, by speaking to groups; and to tolerate hot, humid, and cold, humid weather. Ability to work well with co-workers and the public.
Comfort in handling live animals and using animals in educational presentations.

Attendance and Position DetailsAttendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require overtime. This position provides services for the general public during emergency situations and may include duties different from those in the usual course of work. In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent may be required to remain to perform needed services.

Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
