Summary
The Radiology Technologist will operate radiographic equipment to produce radiographs of the body for diagnostic purposes, as directed by the ER Physician and in accordance with Radiologist-approved protocols. The technologist will position patients and exam tables to obtain optimum views, practice radiation safety techniques (ALARA), and use beam-restrictive devices and shielding to maximize patient and staff safety.
Each technologist will operate CT scan equipment to produce CT images for diagnostic purposes, as directed by the ER Physician in accordance with Radiologist protocol. The technologist will administer and consent for contrast (IV and oral), monitor for reactions, and complete appropriate paperwork and documentation in patients’ charts. The primary goal is patient safety and satisfaction while acquiring diagnostically acceptable exams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain awareness of departmental and operational policies.
- Assist in the maintenance of equipment, including cleaning and QA procedures.
- Explain procedures and associated benefits/risks to patients.
- Prepare patients for examinations (contrast administration, IV access, labs as needed).
- Complete necessary forms related to contrast administration, extravasations, pregnancy, and other exam-related documentation.
- Maintain safety precautions to minimize radiation exposure to patients and staff.
- Stay current with Diagnostic Radiology/CT procedures and radiology safety principles.
- Demonstrate basic anatomy/physiology knowledge and radiology equipment operation; troubleshoot minor issues.
- Proficient use of radiology/lab equipment in the ER; apply proper body mechanics when moving patients/equipment.
- Communicate problems or concerns to appropriate personnel and ensure safe patient transportation as needed.
Requirements
Education and/or Experience, Skills
- Graduate of an accredited school of Radiologic Technology.
- At least 1 year of radiologic/imaging experience and CT experience.
Licenses/Certifications
- Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- Current state licensure; BCLS certification (Texas requirements: ARRT (R) (CT) and TDH/TMB).
Other
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and memos; effective written and verbal communication.
- Ability to perform basic math and measurements; ability to interpret data and apply instructions.
