Public Works and Engineering (PWE) Director

The City of Baytown is a fast-growing, exciting coastal community located just east of downtown Houston on Galveston Bay. The City is currently seeking qualified candidates for the Public Works and Engineering (PWE) Director position. The Director reports to an Assistant City Manager and provides leadership and strategic direction for the operations and maintenance of the City’s streets, drainage, traffic, sanitation, municipal garage, engineering, water production and distribution, along with wastewater collection and treatment. The PWE Department has nearly 300 team members in several divisions and a General Fund budget of approximately $16 million.

In addition, approximately $77 million of other non-General Fund operations are provided through various other funds. PWE also manages a significant Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) that includes approximately 100 projects with budgets totaling $360 million for the current fiscal year.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, or a related field of study, and ten (10) years of experience at a professional level in Public Works and Engineering, with five (5) of those years having progressive management and supervisory responsibilities. Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days).

A Master’s degree in Public or Business Administration, Environmental Sciences, Civil Engineering, or a related field of study, or possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional civil engineer in the State of Texas, is preferred.

The starting annual salary range is $175,000-$195,000; the salary will be competitive and negotiable based on qualifications and experience.
