Job Description Summary
Sonographers/Technologists must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. They are the primary liaison between patients, licensed independent practitioners, and other members of the support team. They must remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills. Participation in quality improvement processes and continuous assessment of performance is expected.
Responsibilities- The Vascular Sonographer performs the daily routine and diagnostic procedures as ordered by the Physician.
- Consistently produce vascular scans of optimal diagnostic quality on patients.
- Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in vascular sonography exams to include: 2D scans, duplex imaging, Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI), and Doppler studies.
- Perform measurements and calculations according to protocol; provide a written or oral summary of preliminary findings; report abnormal findings (if immediate attention is indicated) to the interpreting Radiologist.
- Apply appropriate patient care and recognize patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure.
- Be responsible for the safety and well-being of all patients in the department.
- Communicate effectively with patients and the health care team; be dependable, accountable, and cooperative.
- Follow all established Ultrasound, Radiology and Hospital Policies and Procedures; perform exams within and outside of the Department as needed.
- Conduct basic equipment maintenance, quality control measures, and other administrative, technical, or supervisory tasks as required.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
- Minimum Education and Experience
:
High school diploma or GED required. Preferred Associate Degree from a two-year allied health education program accredited by CAAHEP. Minimum two years of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer; 2-4 years in Vascular Sonography desired. - Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
: RVT (ARDMS), RVS (CCI), or RT(VS) (ARRT);
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through AHA. RDMS (AB, OB/GYN) or RT(S) acceptable, but the Sonographer must obtain Vascular registry within 12 months of date of hire. - Physical Requirements
:
Ability to perform job functions standing, sitting, walking; bend, twist, squat, kneel (infrequently), reach in all directions; fine and gross motor skills; lift/carry up to 50 lbs unassisted (infrequently); tolerate indoor/outdoor environments; vision, hearing, tactile function; ability to work under stress, rotating shifts and overtime; latex-safe environment.
- Minimum Training and
Education:
Graduation from an accredited Vascular Technology, Cardiovascular Technology, or Ultrasonography program is preferred. Equivalent work experience considered. Vascular Sonographers must have a minimum of two years of vascular specific scanning experience and supervisor approval for Vascular Sonographer II; current staff must have Consistent or Mentor ratings and no reprimands within a year for consideration to Vascular Sonographer II. New hires must have two years of vascular specific scanning experience and acceptable references for Vascular Sonographer II. - Active membership in a related professional organization such as SDMS or SVU is required.
- Note on Licensure/Certification
:
Certification by ARDMS as RVT or by CCI as RVS is required before hire. Current BLS certification is required.
