The Role

The purpose of this position is to perform basic and advanced level assessment, treatment, stabilization, and transportation as a Paramedic within the Emergency Medical Services Department. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Essential Functions
  • Respond to emergency calls in an ambulance and perform necessary rescue work in accordance with established protocols for Basic and Advanced Life Support; administer the necessary emergency medical care, including transport ventilators, intravenous infusion pumps, suction units, immobilization equipment, syringes and medications, cardiac monitors/defibrillators/pacers, video laryngoscopes and other advanced airway equipment, and automatic chest compression devices.
  • Perform emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols established by the department and the County’s Medical Director; administer cardiac and narcotic medications via intravenous line, administer specified solutions by intravenous infusion, perform pulmonary ventilations and obtain EKGs for cardiac diagnostics.
  • Perform patient assessment, basic life support techniques in accordance with local protocols including airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; oxygen administration; hemorrhage control; treatment for shock; bandaging and dressing injuries and splinting of fractures and dislocations; treatment of injuries to various parts of the body; provision of basic life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, treatment of injuries and burns;

    lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility, and extrication of patients from confined areas.
  • Transport patients to local and regional medical facilities, maintaining contact with medical staff while in transport and assuring care of the patient.
  • Complete full patient care documentation through various paper and electronic based formats during and after calls for service including information for billing documentation, and legal accountability.
  • Participate in a continuous training program to maintain certification and improve competence in medical technical work and operation; study street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.
  • Inspect response vehicles and their emergency equipment, maintain proper inventory of equipment and supplies; clean and sanitize equipment daily; ensure that they are in proper and good working order; make routine adjustments, but report other than minor defects for specialized attention.
