Overview
Construction Inspector IV or V – Bridge Division (Job Code 2503449) is responsible for overseeing the construction methods and workmanship of bridge and related structures throughout Texas. The incumbent acts as a consultant to bridge districts, provides field support on bridge maintenance and complex construction projects, and works closely with a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work.
Responsibilities- Ensure contractors build bridges and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Perform engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities.
- Interpret plans and specifications, negotiate with producers and suppliers, and resolve differences in interpretation.
- Observe and inspect ongoing construction work and document work progress.
- Drive/travel to geographically separated fabrication plants/project sites for program status monitoring and unannounced inspections.
- Mentor and develop technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Education
:
High school graduate or equivalent in general high school studies. - Experience
:- Construction Inspector IV: 7 years in construction, maintenance, repairs, inspection, engineering support, or related experience.
- Construction Inspector V: 8 years in the same areas. Full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent satisfies the experience requirement.
- Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
- Licenses and Certifications
:- Valid Texas driver’s license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Mandatory Safety Impact Certificate.
- Bridge Inspector training or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within one year of hire.
- Proficiency with applicable inspection methods, traffic management, industry safety standards, and computer programs.
- Wear protective gear such as respirators, hard hats, and other devices.
- Lift up to 50 lbs and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs; frequent bending, crouching, and crouch‑bending.
- Prolonged standing, walking, and moving on foot to accomplish tasks over long distances between work sites.
- Perform tasks in a physically demanding environment and pass a pre‑employment physical and drug test.
- Bridge inspection requires completion of comprehensive training within one year of hire.
