Position Information:
We are looking for a Construction Inspector I, II, or III for the Beaumont Area Office who can provide variety in duties, work with internal and external customers, learn, work independently, and be a strong team player. This role offers opportunities across multiple inspector levels within the office and involves various inspection responsibilities on roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures.

Construction Inspector II (B19): $48,244 - $76,028/yearly;

The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right to determine the level of position offered based on experience, education and related factors and based on business needs.

Job Responsibilities

Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities; responsible to a licensed professional engineer with full authority for approval of all work.

May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Construction Inspector I

  • Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
  • Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Ensures adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensures material tests are performed and materials meet required standards.
  • Drives to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades and moves traffic control devices as required.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Performs drafting, design and surveying work.
  • Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis and review activities for plan development by others.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising throughout the scope of the project.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Construction Inspector II-III

  • Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
  • Assists in planning and coordinating office operations.
  • Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Mentors and develops technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
  • Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
