Heavy Equipment Operator, Construction Labor / Trades
Position Summary
Equipment Operators will operate one or more pieces of mechanical or hydraulic equipment to manage, install, or move materials or other equipment around a construction site. Equipment may be backhoes, rollers, bulldozers, excavators, front end loaders, forklifts (various types, simple front forked to variable reach types), motor graders, skid steers, off road dump trucks or other construction utility vehicles.
Equipment Operator Levels- Equipment Operator I: NCCER Certified. Operates support equipment at construction sites that install, manage, or move materials and equipment. Capable of being certified on forklifts, skid steers, backhoes, excavators, etc., by RCI for safe operations. 5+ years experience in equipment operations for most equipment listed above.
- Equipment Operator II
: NCCER Certified. Operates support equipment at construction sites that install, manage, or move materials and equipment. Capable of being trained and certified by RCI for safe operations in several of the pieces of equipment listed above. 3+ years experience in equipment operations.
- Must have current National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) credentials for the appropriate type of equipment to be used at site
- Must possess all knowledge skills and abilities for position (see below)
- Must meet all physical requirements
- Must have a valid driver's license and meet a motor vehicle records (MVR) check
- Must be able to pass a DOT Physical
- Must have all required tools
- Must be able to regularly and reliably show up at the assigned job site
- Must meet all safety and security requirements at the assigned job site
- Will operate various construction cranes to move equipment and other materials
- Will be responsible for all safety aspects of operating the equipment
- May follow signal directions from a signaler in equipment operations
- Will assess area of operations for safety issues, required processes and planning of equipment operations
- Must have NCCER qualification, experience, and knowledge of operating various equipment listed above with demonstrable skills on specific equipment enabling applicant to be verified and certified with RCI for equipment assignment
- Must have basic mechanical knowledge and illustrate the abilities to inspect equipment
- Must know all proper hand signals
- Must be willing to assist in other duties while not operating equipment
- Must be able to follow instructions correctly
- Must be reliable, accountable and consistent in performing administrative processes such as but not limited to equipment inspection paperwork
- Must be willing and able to follow all instructed safety regulations
- Must be able to make it to work on time and work the designated schedule, including any overtime as needed with the proper notification
- Must be a team player and have effective communication skills in dealing with coworkers and any other related contacts
- Must be able to use problem solving skills and logical thinking to resolve and identify issues, including safety risks

- NCCER Qualifications in one or more of the following:
Backhoe, Rollers, Dozers, Excavators, Forklifts, Loaders, Off-Road Dump Trucks, Scrapers, or Skid Steers - Formal/Technical education
- Safety Toed Boots
- None
- Employee will be required to adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting
- Will talk and hear in order to communicate effectively
- Must have good dexterity with hands and fingers to perform rigging connections
- Able to use arms and hands to signal, grad, hold, turn, and push or pull objects such as materials, controls, and tools
- Will be required to lift, carry and move objects up to 50 lbs in weight
- Will use vision abilities to focus, see short distances, see colors, possess depth perception and peripheral vision
- Must be capable or working outdoors in the elements including but not limited to the heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind
- Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, earplugs/muffs, safety vests, gloves, steel toe/safety toe boots, and masks/respirators
