Job DescriptionThe Communications Technician will provide regional telecommunications field support. This role requires a highly motivated individual, capable of working independently of direct supervision, to support a wide array of communications systems. The technician will provide direct support of local projects, system preventative maintenance, fault isolation and troubleshooting, and 24‑hour on‑call support. The technician will also provide support and first‑level training of field operations personnel.
Day‑to‑DayResponsibilities
- Installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting for various types of communication systems, including voice, data, SCADA, video, microwave, and satellite equipment, as well as the supporting infrastructure.
- Assist project groups with the implementation of project‑related systems.
- Direct local contractors engaged in the installation and maintenance of telecommunications systems.
- Provide support and first‑level training of field operations personnel.
- Act as first‑level liaison between field operations and the IT organization.
- Drive standards in the field and provide feedback to the communications engineering team.
- Provide 24×7 on‑call support.
- Travel up to 40%.
- 7+ years of experience installing and/or maintaining telecommunications systems, including wireless data, SCADA, and LAN cabling.
- Proficient at using test equipment and software required to support field telecommunications.
- Extensive experience with voice, phone system, and microwave installation and maintenance.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Knowledge of telephony (VOIP, PR1 & T1 circuitry).
- Physical security experience (badge access, CCTV, and security cameras).
- Hands‑on fiber‑optic testing and reading of test results.
- RF experience with 2‑way radio.
- VSAT/satellite communications.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Associate’s degree in Electronics or 7 years of equivalent experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work independently and prioritize assigned activities.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact with internal and external teams/clients to solve problems.
- Physical ability to work outdoors and safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Network certification (e.g., CCNA).
- FCC license.
- Experience with intercoms.
