Maintenance Refrigeration Technician – 1st Shift

Join Richelieu Foods as a maintenance refrigeration technician. Your pay will be based on skills and experience.

Base Pay Range

$35.00/yr - $35.00/yr

Essential Functions

Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, you will provide leadership and coordinate efforts for the plant systems pertaining to Ammonia, Air, Water, and HVAC. You will establish, organize, plan, and implement maintenance programs that improve operating efficiencies quickly and safely. Support the maintenance strategy for Preventive Maintenance, Corrective Maintenance, Operator Asset Care, Continuous Improvement, and PSM. Develop and implement technical training/certifications as needed.

Provide technical services and support the plant. Coordinate with outside contractors including justifications, design, project implementation, and startups.

Essential Duties
  • Monitors and evaluates equipment logs and reports for refrigeration, water, compressed air, and HVAC systems. Looks to correct chronic or repetitive problems by evaluating the log or reports.
  • Maintains records of all equipment and recommends improvements to inventory and preventive maintenance systems based on this information.
  • Coordinates efforts with outside contractors to execute maintenance contracts.
  • Procures materials necessary for the maintenance of equipment in your area of responsibility.
  • Ensures new equipment meets OSHA, sanitation, quality, maintenance, and production requirements.
  • Plans all work for engine room equipment.
  • Oversees and approves all repairs.
  • Maintains fire suppression systems and ammonia leak vigilance with a 0‑tolerance leak mentality.
  • Handles all matters pertaining to the engine room safely.
  • Participates in the PSM program.
  • Keeps Maintenance Manager, Manufacturing Manager, and Plant Manager advised of safety‑related operating conditions and problems on a timely basis.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local EPA regulations.
  • Provides a safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
  • Promotes safe working habits.
  • Interacts with all plant departments.
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in Ammonia Refrigeration or related field.
  • Background that includes (but not limited to) air compressor equipment, HVAC, plant utilities systems, equipment installation, and startups.
  • Experience working with vendors and contractors.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience in the food industry and knowledge of GMPs and SQF audits.
  • Experience and familiarity with plant utilities and wastewater systems.
  • Previous experience with PSM and PHA.
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Work Environment
  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, vibration, and loud noise.
Physical Demands
  • Regular standing, talking, hearing, walking, using hands to finger, handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Regularly lifting up to 10 pounds, frequently up to 25 pounds, and occasionally more than 50 pounds.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
  • Staggered hours Monday–Friday with some weekend work and on‐call every third weekend.
