Job SummaryThe Registered Nurse – Acute (Surgical Services) functions as a vital member of the healthcare team, demonstrating a customer/patient focus, effective communication, professionalism, self‑development, and teamwork. The individual utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive care for selected patient populations and their families. Excellence in clinical, problem‑solving, interpersonal and leadership skills is expected, with decisions consistent with hospital policies, department protocols/guidelines, and the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.
ScheduleMonday–Thursday 10‑hour days (1st shift). Call required 1 weeknight per week and every 4th or 5th weekend (including Friday). Call response time is 30 minutes.
Responsibilities- Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive patient care.
- Works independently within scope of practice to provide safe, optimal patient care.
- Promotes a positive work environment and supports and/or leads change initiatives within the department and organization to achieve effective collaboration and communication.
- Performs specialized or department‑specific nursing functions as educationally prepared to provide safe and efficient patient care.
- Completes documentation required for patient care in an accurate, concise, and timely manner.
- Assesses and addresses patient education needs to promote patient self‑management upon discharge.
- Communicates effectively with patients, families, visitors, staff, physicians, and employees of other agencies to create a positive customer service atmosphere.
- Demonstrates positive problem solving and conflict resolution at intradepartmental and interdepartmental levels to promote effective communication with staff members.
- Maintains awareness of current quality and safety measures on the unit and follows guidelines or reporting measures to ensure safety of patients, visitors, and staff.
- Provides appropriate support to team members assigned to the patient and delegates responsibilities to team members within their scope of practice and competency level to address the needs of the patient in an efficient and patient‑centric manner.
- Collaborates with other staff to organize the daily workload, prioritize care, and respond to patient crises and emergencies to assure quality patient care and improvement in the care processes.
- Adheres to departmental policies and procedures and individualizes them to meet patient needs to maintain compliance with organizational, state and federal policy and to maintain patient satisfaction.
- Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
- Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.
Education
- Minimum:
Diploma or degree in nursing. - Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Experience
- Minimum required:
None. - Preferred/Optional:
Two years hospital nursing experience.
Certifications/Licenses
- Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or Nurse Compact License.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of employment.
- Additional department‑specific certifications, licenses, or memberships may be required (varies by department/location).
- Preferred: BLS certification at time of hire.
