Para educator I – Sexton Mountain Elementary Purpose
The Para educator I assists the Teacher in the delivery of an instructional program, through preparation of the classroom and materials, and through working with individual and small groups of students. The Para educator I also provides supervision of student activities in order to ensure that the school maintains a safe and orderly environment.

Student Support - Salary: $22.30–$28.17 per hour
Principal or Assistant Principal; directly supervised by Teacher for direction and supervision.
Nature & ScopeThe Para educator I performs variable work in accordance with established procedures under the general direction of the Teacher. The role involves coordination with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and other staff. The incumbent must act as a professional role model, maintaining decorum and calm.
Essential Job Functions- Conduct oneself in the best interest of students, upholding public education values.
- Assist in academic instruction and presentation of materials by working individually with small groups or individual students, reinforcing instruction, following up on specific subject‑area activities, monitoring tasks and assignments, and supporting classroom assignments and projects.
- Provide classroom support by setting up work areas, displays, distributing and collecting supplies and materials.
- Supervise activities in playground, cafeteria, bus loading, field trips, and other student gathering areas.
- Assist with physical needs of students, such as feeding support or restroom assistance.
- Consult with teachers concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs.
- Prepare, administer, and score tests and assignments as directed, including proficiency placement tests.
- Encourage acceptable student behavior and maintain classroom discipline; reinforce rules and procedures.
- Answer student questions, provide examples, and offer general guidance.
- Perform clerical duties, including ordering supplies, preparing documents, maintaining student records, phone communications, compiling reports, and general administrative tasks.
- Work accurately and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
- Follow oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Maintain effective relationships with classroom staff, custodial staff, parents, and students from diverse backgrounds.
- Comply with all district policies and the Code of Professional Conduct.
- Associate’s degree, preferably with coursework in working with children; OR a high school diploma/GED plus a qualifying state or local academic assessment score in reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Understanding of child development principles and practices.
- Effective communication with employees and students, using tact, courtesy, and good judgment.
- Ability to collect data and perform basic math functions.
- Fluency in written and spoken English, with accuracy and ability to follow oral instructions.
- Proficiency operating standard office equipment such as computer, word processor, calculator, and photocopier.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check.
The role requires working primarily indoors and outdoors (e.g., supervising students), in variable weather conditions.
- Stand and/or walk for extended periods.
- Observe multiple students across large and small spaces, attending to individual needs while ensuring no students are unattended.
- Walk quickly at times and assume various physical postures; possible lifting up to 50 lb.
- Working in noisy environments, potential exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, aggressive student behavior, and inclement weather.
- Occasional travel to multiple sites, meetings or activities outside the normal worksite.
