Summary

Serves as a supervisory Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) within a Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) department at the VA facility. Works in support of the medical equipment management program. At the full performance level, the BESS utilizes supervisory and personnel management authorities and responsibilities.

Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education – Experience – Certification:
    • Associates or higher degree in biomedical technology or biomedical engineering, or in electronics / information technology / other engineering, with 1 year of creditable experience.
    • Completion of the Department of Defense (DOD) biomedical equipment technician training program, or a DOD training program in repair and maintenance of electronic systems or information technology with 1 year of creditable experience.
    • Completion of a biomedical engineering technician or Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) certificate program that included an internship or apprenticeship; or that did not include an internship but with 1 year of creditable experience.
    • Holder or former holder of CBET, CRES, CLES, or CHTM certification.
  • Continuous maintenance of certification is not required throughout VHA employment.
  • English language proficiency – spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
  • Grade determination: GS‑12 Supervisor Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, with 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to GS‑11.
  • Experience:

    Management of medical equipment and clinical systems (installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, electrical safety inspections, patient safety, cybersecurity, decommissioning), project oversight, drafting RFPs and SOWs, market research, contract management, system monitoring, security procedures, equipment inspections, user instruction, inventory accuracy, system backups, schematic use, vendor coordination, hazard alerts, root‑cause analysis, disposal, CMMS documentation, compliance with NFPA, FDA, NRC, The Joint Commission, AAMI, and escalation to higher technical support.
  • k‑S‑A’s for GS‑12 level: workflow management, policy development, interpersonal relationship management, data analysis, supervisory skills, guidance on medical equipment, and reference to VA qualification standards (update: https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Standards/).
  • Physical requirements include electrical work, ladder work, outdoors, work alone, exposure to hazardous materials, occasional travel, infection control practices, and environmental stewardship.
Duties
  • Oversee, direct, and manage the lifecycle of the facility's medical equipment and clinical systems.
  • Collaborate with other departments, service lines, clinical administrative staff, and executive leadership at medical center, VISN, and national levels.
  • Establish workload distribution and revise work schedules to meet priorities.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate performance plans for subordinate staff and recognize high performance.
  • Manage, respond to, and remediate hazard alerts, recall notifications, and incident reports for medical equipment and systems.
  • Document all actions in the appropriate system.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on assigned committees, projects, and work groups.
  • Troubleshoot medical equipment and systems using technical data, complete corrective actions, and document work in CMMS.
  • Provide customer support to staff, evaluate issues, deliver solutions, and keep customers informed of status.
  • Educate staff on safe operation and user‑level maintenance of medical equipment.
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with applicable standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Respond to system failures by reloading operating systems, coordinating with the Office of Information and Technology (OIT) to maintain uptime.
