EMT - Emergency Medical Technician
Jan-Care Ambulance, Inc. invites qualified candidates to join our team as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in multiple locations, including West Virginia, Raleigh, and Durham, NC.
Position OverviewThe primary objective is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation while preserving patients' dignity and ensuring community safety.
Essential Job Functions- Attend instruction sessions for orientation, EMS operations, compliance, and emergency vehicle operations; maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
- Provide out-of-hospital care and safe ambulance transport in accordance with statewide protocols and medical command direction.
- Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 12 sacks alone and up to 250 lbs with assistance at a height of 33 inches for a distance of 10 feet (WV OEMS).
- Respond to spoken information and sounds common to the emergency scene.
- Communicate verbally, via telephone, and by telecommunications using the English language.
- Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions; document patient information in approved WV OEMS record systems.
- Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills required for quality patient care, including bending, stooping, crawling, and walking on uneven surfaces.
- Inspect EMS equipment to ensure adequate supplies, verify proper operation, refuel, check fluids, and report needed maintenance.
- Respond to callback or call‑in emergency situations.
- Assist other emergency personnel as required and complete tasks assigned by company supervisors and managers.
- Maintain professional appearance and decorum; perform general maintenance and cleaning work in stations, training facilities, and ambulances.
- Perform event stand‑by operations for sporting events, community festivals, and other large‑crowd events.
- Respond to hazardous material incidents at the first responder level and function in other uncommon situations.
- Provide emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events.
- Have basic understanding of stress response and methods to ensure personal well‑being.
- Interact professionally with outside agencies and personnel, including medical facility staff and emergency responders.
- General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance operations, and proper use of EMS equipment.
- Ability to learn through varied training methods.
- Ability to acquire knowledge of local roadways and physical layout of assigned communities.
- Ability to perform airway management, ventilate, administer CPR, and use certification‑level medications and defibrillators; provide trauma care, hemorrhage control, shock treatment, wound bandaging, and spinal immobilization.
EMS operations occur 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in all weather conditions. Personnel must be prepared to respond at a moment's notice and maintain viable field operations until the situation is resolved.
Special Requirements & Qualifications- Must be 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of Workforce evaluations and/or equivalent educational screening exam approved by Jan‑Care/GEMS.
- EVO'S must maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving history.
- Jan‑Care/GEMS is a drug‑free company; employees must pass initial and random screenings.
- The following background checks will be conducted prior to hiring:
- OIG list of excluded individuals and Excluded Parties Listing System.
- Criminal history check.

- Reference check.
- Must maintain a valid telephone number.
- Must maintain valid Health Care Provider level CPR certification.
- Must maintain valid certification of EMT‑8 with the WV OEMS office.
