This initiative is an Ameri Corps Program designed to strengthen communities across the country by building leadership capacity, supporting nonprofit and public-sector partners, and investing in the next generation of service leaders. Based in the heart of Appalachia near the New River Gorge, the program serves communities facing challenges such as food insecurity, community resilience, education and workforce development, civic engagement, and legacy environmental impacts, and is guided by values of service, collaboration, and environmental stewardship.

As an Ameri Corps Position, the VISTA Leader mentors and supports Ameri Corps VISTA members, facilitates training and professional development, strengthens communication and coordination across project sites, and connects members to national networks and resources to ensure high-quality service experiences and sustainable, community-driven outcomes.

The Ameri Corps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.

Stewards VISTA Leaders will mentor VISTA members in the field who are serving a VISTA year through Stewards Individual Placements.

The VISTA Leader will:

• Aid in the communication of VISTA policies and administrative procedures to VISTAs
• Assist in the leadership development of VISTAs
• Assist the sponsor with recruitment and preparation for the arrival of VISTAs
• Advise the Program Coordinator on potential problem areas and needs of VISTAs
• Aids VISTAs in the development of effective working relationships and understanding of VISTA program concepts
• Develop professional development and training opportunities for VISTAs

Stewards VISTA leaders gain experience in organizational development, peer mentoring, diplomacy, outreach and communication, networking, and leadership. Stewards VISTA Leaders must be self-motivated, utilizing knowledge and experience to support projects that connect economic opportunity and environmental stewardship. This position works with other VISTA leaders.

• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
• At least 18 years of age
• College graduate
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
• Must have previous Ameri Corps, VISTA, or Peace Corps experience
