The occupational therapist helps students participate and function in daily routines and other life activities. They evaluate patients, create treatment plans, and implement them or support their implementation.
Responsibilities- Plans, organizes, and conducts occupational therapy program in school setting to facilitate development and rehabilitation of students who are cognitively, physically, emotionally, or learning disabled.
- Plans programs involving activities, such as manual arts and crafts; practice in functional, pre‑vocational, vocational, and homemaking skills, and activities of daily living; and participation in sensory‑motor educational, recreational, and social activities designed to help students develop or regain physical or mental functioning or adjust to disabilities.
- Consults with other members of the teaching staff to select activity programs consistent with needs and capabilities of individuals and to coordinate occupational therapy with other therapeutic activities.
- Teaches individual skills and techniques required for participation in activities and evaluates individual's progress.
- Requisition s supplies and equipment that is needed for delivery of services.
- Provides direct therapeutic services to special needs students, as outlined in students’ IEP.
- Carry out assessment and evaluation procedures for referred students in accordance with special education regulations and local procedures.
- Plan and develop therapeutic intervention goals that are educationally relevant and will be used in students’ educational and home programs.
- Establish and maintain a system of documentation that is professional, efficient, and accountable and conforms to state and district policy.
- Order and adapt equipment to meet the therapeutic needs of the students.
- Maintain and be accountable for the OT equipment budget and inventory of OT supplies.
- Communicate results of evaluations and reports of OT services to the educational staff, parents, and, when appropriate, students and other professionals and agencies.
- Attend staffing meetings, IEP reviews, and other school meetings when requested.
- Facilitate in‑service education and professional development for related service and OT staff.
- Provide consultation to the education system regarding student needs, professional needs, and system needs.
- Perform re‑evaluations of students focusing on areas of educational needs at intervals determined by the individual education plan and/or state special education regulations.
- Certification by the Occupational Therapy Certification Board (OTCB)
- Licensed by the State of Massachusetts Department of Health
