Description

The Middle School Coach is responsible for helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self‑esteem. The Coach reports to the Athletic Director and Head Coach.

Responsibilities
  • Administrative Responsibilities
    • Collaborate with the Athletic Director and Head Coach on organization, administration and philosophy of the sport.
    • Lead the program within the athletics department.
    • Oversee the quality of coaching in the sport.
    • Adhere to the MIAA Coaches Guidebook and BPS Coaches Handbook, acting as a positive role model on and off the field.
    • Coaching of individual participants in skills necessary for excellent achievement.
    • Maintain competency in MIAA rules, event procedures, coaching techniques and general information about all aspects of the sport.
    • Recommend teams to the Athletic Director/Head Coach.
    • Schedule BPS facility use in cooperation with the Athletic Director; secure approval before using off‑school facilities.
    • Plan transportation and appropriate supervision at away contests in compliance with district travel policy.
  • Supervisory Duties
    • Assist in recruiting, hiring, evaluating and assigning duties to all assistant, sub‑varsity and volunteer coaches.
  • Record‑Keeping Responsibilities
    • Maintain an accurate current team and program roster and submit copies to the Athletic Office.
    • Prepare and submit an annual budget; follow BPS school committee policies for funding and manage fundraising for all teams under the Coach’s direction.
    • Develop consistent and positive communication with the school, media, parents and public.
    • Maintain accurate statistics, records and results of the season.
    • Arrange presentation of team awards through the Athletic Office.
    • Record, submit and maintain all required MIAA & BPS forms and paperwork.
    • Submit all grants with approval from the superintendent or designee and Athletic Director.
  • Athletic Behavior/Eligibility Responsibilities
    • Enforce all MIAA rules related to the sport.
    • Model discipline and sportsmanship, establish and enforce penalties for breaches.
    • Ensure no bullying or hazing occurs.
    • Set performance criteria for interscholastic competition.
    • Check eligibility with the Athletic Office.
    • Establish written program expectations.
    • Enforce academic expectations; partner with faculty to ensure student‑athletes are academically engaged and successful.
  • Injury/Safety
    • Verify no participant practices or uses equipment until physical examination and baseline concussion testing are complete.
    • Maintain safety conditions of the facility or area whenever students are present.
    • Enforce rules and regulations concerning conditioning and health.
    • Report injuries to the athletic trainer, submit incident reports to the Athletic Office, and ensure proper medical care.
    • Provide supervision until athletes leave the building or site; secure windows, doors and gates.
  • Team Activities
    • Plan all practice sessions, competitions and out‑of‑season conditioning programs.
    • Guarantee a positive, harassment‑free environment.
    • Plan and execute special events such as assemblies, senior/parent nights, team meals, awards banquets and other recognitions.
  • Other Duties
Qualifications
  • Valid teaching certificate and a bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • First aid and CPR training required.
  • Level 1 or 2 MIAA Coaches Education Certification required for new coaches.
  • Experience in teaching, coaching and sports medicine preferred.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success in application of relevant knowledge.
  • Sport‑specific certifications preferred.
  • Playing experience preferred.
