Role can be worked remotely. Ideally within New York State but other New England locations considered. Some travel to client sites required a couple of times per month.
NYS Department of Finance Services – Casualty General Adjuster License required.
General Description:
Supervise activities of 1 claim handler within the third‑party administration claims handling department. Responsibilities include supervising, processing, paying and resolving liability claims. Provide direction, set goals, evaluate results and ensure staff goals are attained. Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, state regulations and carrier/client instructions.
- Hire, train, develop, conduct performance reviews and performance improvement plans for the claim handler.
- Supervise activities for claim handlers, ensuring claims are processed, paid and resolved per policies and legal requirements.
- Provide leadership, coaching, counseling and guidance. Assign responsibilities and monitor progress.
- Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, standards and guidelines; coordinate compliance across the division.
- Manage claims activities—receiving client claims, research, payment determination, and ongoing administration. Review claims files for payment appropriateness and timeliness.
- Visit clients regularly and maintain strong relationships; communicate with production and customer service teams regarding account status.
- Assist staff with complex work and resolve escalated issues by coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Schedule and assign work to meet key deliverables.
- Review and evaluate activities regularly; provide management with performance updates and take corrective action as needed.
- Stay current on industry developments, regulatory issues and guidelines; advise staff and recommend procedural changes.
- Participate in civic activities to promote community growth and a positive company image.
- Execute special projects and perform additional duties as required.
- Contribute to a positive, ethical, respectful environment and model company culture internally and externally.
Skills and Abilities
- 4‑year degree or equivalent education and experience.
- 10–15 years of liability claims experience (auto and general liability).
- Strong knowledge of liability claims management and legal/regulatory requirements.
- Supervisory experience and ability to coach, train and motivate staff.
- Data evaluation skills and claims strategy formulation.
- Negotiation skills to resolve large claims at minimal cost.
- Ability to coordinate diverse individuals to resolve claims.
- Highly organized with large client volume management.
- Proficiency with claims management technology applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Continuing education required to maintain licensing.
- Presentation and sales presentation skills.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and negotiation abilities.
- Travel required at least a couple times per month.
