Position: Van Driver (Bedford)

Van Driver (Bedford)

Education Alternatives is seeking van drivers for the Bedford location. Van Drivers are paid hourly and are responsible for driving clients on an agency owned vehicle to and from our sites located throughout the greater Akron/Cleveland area and on field trips to various locations. This position is a part-time hourly position, Monday through Friday. Ohio Department of Education Certification training will be provided by Education Alternatives.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Applicants must be at least 25 years old
  • Must hold a valid Ohio driver’s license
  • Must have a good driving record, as determined by the Ohio Department of Education
  • Must be able to pass a pre‑service physical and drug test
  • Must not have a criminal background that would disqualify applicant from working with children
  • SKILLS – adhering to safety practice, administering first aid, operating agency vehicles, fire extinguisher, cell phone, and standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • KNOWLEDGE – reading manuals, writing documents, analyzing situations; basic vehicle maintenance; first aid; health standards and hazards; cell phone communication; utilizing wheelchairs, tie‑downs, child safety seats, lifts, etc. (by assignment).
  • ABILITY – attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups; displaying tact and courtesy; establishing effective working relationships; exercising sound judgement; maintaining understanding of special needs; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; handling constant distractions.
Working Conditions

Physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking and 10% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents, and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution.
  • Work with clients with emotional and behavioral disabilities and intervene to ensure order and safety.
  • Assist clients and other passengers (e.g., seating, restraints, special equipment) for the purpose of safe loading and unloading from vehicles.
  • Advise clients and other passengers on appropriate behavior to reinforce guidelines and maintain passenger safety.
  • Safely transport clients to/from their residence to/from the designated drop‑off point in a timely manner.
  • Inform day treatment personnel and parents of events, policies and/or practices.
  • Respond to inquiries from clients, parents, and/or staff regarding transportation services.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles’ interior and exterior for safety, appearance, and sanitation.
  • Fuel assigned vehicle to maintain safe operation.
  • Monitor passengers during transit for order and safety.
  • Perform first aid as necessary.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with staff, including teachers, building directors, fleet manager, and director of transportation.
  • Prepare documentation (daily log, incident reports, behavior rating, mileage).
  • Conduct safety checks on van before each departure and submit a daily pre‑trip inspection form.
  • Attend all agency trainings, including quarterly in‑service trainings.
