The Role  An established, award-winning main contractor is looking for an experienced Senior Design Manager to join the project team delivering a landmark mixed-use development in Bedfordshire valued at more than £400m.
The scheme has an initial pre-construction period of around 12 months, including regular travel to the contractor's London office, before the position moves to the Bedfordshire site. With an anticipated programme of approximately four years, this offers excellent stability and the chance to shape a major project from its early stages through to completion.
Working as part of the senior project team, the Senior Design Manager will lead the design process from feasibility, planning and procurement through to technical coordination and on-site delivery. The role will include managing external consultants, maintaining technical compliance and making sure design information supports the construction programme and commercial objectives.

Key Responsibilities   Lead and coordinate the design process across pre-construction and delivery
Work closely with the client, consultants, subcontractors and site teams
Review design information for buildability, quality and technical compliance
Manage the performance and output of external design consultants
Identify and resolve design risks before they affect programme or cost
Support procurement by ensuring design packages are complete and issued on time
Maintain clear communication between the design, commercial and construction teams
Ensure designs meet current regulations, contract requirements and company standards
Experience Required   At least 10 years' experience in design management within a main contractor environment
Strong pre-construction and project delivery experience
Experience working on large, complex construction or mixed-use developments
Good knowledge of design coordination, buildability and technical compliance
Confident managing consultants and working with clients and delivery teams
Previous experience as a Senior Design Manager, Design Manager, Technical Manager, Design Coordinator or Design and Build Manager
Qualifications and Skills   HNC, degree or equivalent qualification in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture or a related discipline
Strong planning, organisation and communication skills
Commercially aware with the confidence to challenge design decisions where needed
A practical understanding of construction methods and project delivery
