Instrumentation Engineer (Electronics)
Bedford | £35,000–£40,000 | Shift-Based Role

This isn’t a role where you sit behind a desk running standard tests.

You’ll be hands‑on with advanced engineering systems, building and supporting the instrumentation that enables complex aerodynamic testing and research. The work is practical, varied and often one‑off – where precision, attention to detail and reliability really matter.

You’ll be part of a multi‑skilled team responsible for assembling, installing and maintaining instrumentation used to capture critical data from highly specialised test facilities.

That means everything from soldering and building fine cable assemblies, through to installing sensors, connecting data acquisition systems, and fault‑finding down to component level when things don’t behave as expected.

This role suits someone who enjoys working with their hands as much as their head – comfortable moving between lab and industrial environments, and being directly involved in ensuring systems are ready to perform when it matters.

You’ll be:

  • Building and repairing instrumentation assemblies and cabling
  • Installing sensors and instrumentation into complex test systems
  • Supporting data acquisition and measurement systems
  • Diagnosing faults across cables, sensors and assemblies
  • Working closely with engineers to support live test activity

You’ll likely bring:

  • Background as an electronics technician or similar hands‑on role
  • Strong understanding of basic electronics and fault finding
  • Experience using test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes etc.)
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and schematics
  • A detail‑driven, practical approach to engineering work

Experience with sensors (strain, temperature, pressure) or data acquisition systems is beneficial, but not essential.

Working Pattern
  • 40 hours per week on a rotating shift pattern:
  • 07:00 – 15:00
  • 14:00 – 22:00
  • Overtime available (enhanced rates up to 2x on Sundays/Bank Holidays)

This is a role where you’ll develop specialist skills, work on technically unique projects, and be part of a team delivering high‑quality engineering in a stable, well‑respected organisation.

If you enjoy hands‑on electronics, fault finding and working in environments where no two days are quite the same, this is worth exploring.
