Astute's Power Team are looking for an EC&I (Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation) Technician to join a large, modern Energy from Waste Power Station located in Bedfordshire.

The facility, which is now in full time operations, will provide a vital outlet for the sustainable disposal of over 545,000 tonnes of residual waste per year and will generate over 60 megawatts of low carbon energy – enough electricity to meet the needs of over 112,500 homes.

The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting the EC&I Engineer in performing pre‑planned and reactive maintenance of all EC&I assets on site.

Responsibilities and duties of the Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Technician role

Reporting directly to the EC&I Engineer as an Electrical, Control and Instrument Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • Pre‑planned and reactive maintenance duties on all electrical, controls and instrumentation assets across the power station
  • Fault‑finding/maintaining mostly electrical system; motors, drives, single phase & three phase equipment, switch gear, high/low voltage plant etc. and Instrumentation (pressure, temperature, level & flow) and control systems
  • Calibrating instrumentation
  • Conducting continuous improvement activities, plant modifications and design work
  • Supervising 3rd party contractors
  • Working in line with maintenance techniques and best practices
  • Assisting in plant developments and projects
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records on the site CMMS
  • Assist in outage planning, scheduling and coordination.
  • To ensure the availability of plant spares
Professional qualifications
  • Ideally qualified in a recognised Electrical / C&I apprenticeship in a heavy process industry
  • A relevant technical qualification such as an NVQ / ONC / HNC in Electrical, Control or Instrumentation engineering or a similar discipline
  • IOSH or NEBOSH would be advantageous
Personal skills
  • At least 4 years of hands‑on maintenance experience with motors, switch gear, instrumentation (flow, level, pressure, temperature etc) and control systems (SCADA, DCS and PLC)
  • Practical knowledge of process plant and equipment gained in a heavy engineering environment such as power generation, petrochemical, steel works, CHP plant, paper mill etc. Royal Navy Marine Engineers will also be considered.
  • Experience with High‑Voltage equipment such as transformers / switch gear will be advantageous.
