Basic DBS required About the Role A Wembley-based Local Authority is seeking an experienced Debt Recovery Officer with a strong background in Council Tax recovery within a local authority setting to join their team on an ongoing temporary basis. This is a key role responsible for maximising income collection and ensuring all debt recovery activity is carried out efficiently, fairly, and in line with legislation and council policies.

Key Responsibilities Recover and enforce a range of debts, including Council Tax (NEC), Sundry debts (Oracle Advanced Collections) , and other debt portfolios. Manage accounts through all stages of the recovery cycle, including enforcement action where appropriate. Ensure all recovery activity complies with relevant legislation, case law, and the Council’s Debt Recovery Policy . Negotiate payment arrangements effectively while balancing customer circumstances and the Council’s financial interests.

Provide a professional and customer-focused service in a diverse community environment . Liaise with internal teams, enforcement agents, courts, and external stakeholders. Essential Knowledge & Skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills , with proven experience in debt recovery negotiation . Strong numerical, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making abilities . Sound understanding of customer service principles in a diverse environment. Knowledge of debt recovery and enforcement processes , including experience with County Court and/or Magistrates’ Court procedures .

Proven experience working in a Local Authority debt recovery role , specifically handling Council Tax arrears (essential). Requirements Previous hands-on experience in Council Tax recovery within a Local Authority is essential . Familiarity with systems such as NEC and/or Oracle Advanced Collections is highly desirable. Ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to pass a Basic DBS check .
