About the job

National Highways is excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Project Manager to join our Road Safety Engineering team in the East region.

As a Project Manager, you will play a vital role in planning and managing the successful development and delivery of a portfolio of road safety projects within the region's five-year rolling capital programme. By building trusted relationships and understanding the needs of key stakeholders, you will work collaboratively with regional road safety partnerships to develop and deliver road safety strategies and initiatives.

You will oversee the performance of external consultants, ensuring the highest standards of governance, quality assurance, health and safety, and technical compliance. Your expertise will be key to delivering successful projects and achieving our road safety objectives.

This role is based at our Bedford, Cambridge or Ipswich office.

  • Developing and maintaining strong collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, consultants and colleagues across National Highways. You will ensure a shared understanding of the portfolio's strategic and delivery objectives, review and report on delivery performance, resolve complex issues, and prepare project business cases.
  • Managing programmes, financial reporting and risk across the capital expenditure budgets for all projects within the portfolio, ensuring effective financial and contractual controls are in place and adhered to by all project resources.
  • Maintaining National Highways' reputation throughout project delivery while building and sustaining effective relationships with regional road safety partnerships.
  • Proactively identifying opportunities to improve road safety, driving continuous improvement within your area of responsibility, and championing and sharing best practice across the road safety community.
  • Managing and evaluating risks, issues, dependencies and constraints across the portfolio, leading the development and implementation of appropriate solutions.
About you
  • A recognised qualification in a relevant engineering discipline and/or significant experience in the delivery of road safety programmes.
  • Proven portfolio and project management experience. Relevant qualifications such as MSP, APM or PRINCE2 are desirable.
  • Experience of NEC contract management, supported by a strong understanding of project management practices, processes and controls.
  • A good understanding of relevant legislation, technical standards and industry requirements.
  • Proven experience of building and managing relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders to achieve successful, collaborative outcomes.

External candidates will normally be appointed at the lower end of the salary range. Existing employees will be appointed in accordance with our pay policy.

We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds.
