Position: Assistant School Counsellor Reservoir)

Contract duration

  • 1 January 2026 to 30 November 2026
Working Hours
  • Four (4) days per week, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (inclusive of a 30-minute lunch break), with the working days to be mutually agreed upon by the Personnel and the Authority.
  • Service not required on Saturdays, Sundays, gazetted public holidays and June schools holidays
Job Description
  • Provide individual and group counselling to students with supervision from Senior School Counsellor.
  • Working in close coordination with Senior School Counsellor to confer with staff, parents, and external professionals/agencies about students being counselled; conduct home visits when needed.
  • Refer students and their families to community resources or external professionals when required with coordination and oversight from Senior School Counsellor.
  • Working in close coordination with Senior School Counsellor to provide direct crisis intervention and follow-up support for critical incidents (e.g., trauma, major behavioral/mental health issues).
  • Maintain case consultation records, proper documentation and updates to school management on the students' progress.
  • Provide support to Senior Counsellor in developing and implementing a school-wide counselling program (including needs analysis, planning, evaluation) and support school staff (training/consultation) around student wellness.
  • Collaborate on a frequent basis with teachers, parents, school leaders, and external agencies such as FSCs, MSF, Com Link and VWOs to build the social-emotional well‑being environment in the school.
  • Collaborate with school personnel where required on content creation and teaching resources.
Operational Scope

The Assistant School Counsellor typically works within a school and is part of the student‑support ecosystem. The operational scope includes the following:

  • With guidance from Senior School Counsellor, conduct one‑to‑one sessions, small‑group work (for social‑skills, peer support, specific issues), and larger‑group or school‑wide programs/workshops (e.g., resilience, social‑emotional learning) for Tier 2 and 3 students.
  • With guidance from Senior School Counsellor, facilitate small‑group sessions such as circle time, journaling, or goal setting to promote self‑awareness, resilience, and social‑emotional growth.
  • Working closely with Senior School Counsellor, liaise with parents and teachers: for example, discussing student issues, advising on support strategies.
  • Together with Senior School Counsellor, perform home visits or liaise with external social/health agencies (FSCs, MSF, Com Link and VWOs) especially for more complex student needs.
  • Maintain records, monitor the progress of students under their care, and contribute to school policy or program reviews for student wellness.
  • In crisis or significant incident cases (e.g., student self‑harm, traumatic event, major behavioral incident), provide intervention, follow‑up, and support across stakeholders with close coordination with Senior School Counsellor.
Requirements
  • Applicants must minimally possess a diploma or equivalent in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or counselling qualifications recognized by the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC), or related field.
  • Familiarity with the counselling approaches relevant to children between the age of 7 to 12, including frameworks such as Choice Theory, Narrative Therapy, Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person‑Centred Therapy, Solution‑Focused Brief Therapy, Adlerian Play Therapy, Mindfulness‑Based Counselling etc.
Skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy for students with social‑emotional/mental health difficulties, cultural‑sensitivity, resilience
  • Team player with a strong desire to contribute towards the betterment of the school.
  • Competence in basic IT systems (e.g., Microsoft Office, student management systems) for documentation and reporting
Experience
  • Preferably with at least two years of relevant experience in school / community‑based social work, youth work, or related educational settings (primary and/or secondary schools)
  • Experience working with adolescents/students in preventive, developmental, or intervention programs
  • Familiarity with collaboration with schools, parents, and community agencies to support student well‑being
  • Experience facilitating after‑school programs or group work sessions is an advantage.
