Mental Health Technician 7A-7P – St. Veronica

• Full‑time, 7A‑7P

• Base pay: $18.00/hr – $22.00/hr

Primary Purpose

Provides professional direct patient care and program services under the supervision of a registered nurse to senior behavioral health patients. Works collaboratively with the healthcare team to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment and provides compassionate, person‑centered care consistent with role scope, regulatory standards, and practice expectations. Demonstrates competency in caring for older adults and geriatric patients typically aged 55 years and older.

General

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates performance of tasks necessary to maintain a safe and therapeutic milieu and provide optimum patient care.
  • Provides direct patient care and assistance as needed and as assigned to support patients with ADLs including dressing, bathing, eating, feeding, and other tasks to ensure quality care and management of the patient.
  • Leads and/or assists with program‑related activities and groups that reinforce daily goals, learned skills, and cognitive stimulation appropriate within role scope and training.
  • Uses program de‑escalation techniques that have been trained and support a trauma‑informed, person‑centered approach toward patients.
  • Performs patient rounds and safety checks and always maintains responsibility to remove and promptly report any safety issue immediately to nursing staff during the shift.
  • Performs and documents vital signs on patients as assigned.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of patient care equipment necessary to perform role tasks.
  • Follows unit safety practices and procedures at all times to include continuous hand hygiene, appropriate use of PPE, assistive devices, fall prevention protocols, and contraband prevention.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participates in hospital educational programs as requested.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned and required.
  • Properly and accurately documents / charts observations and other data related to the clinical condition of the patient.
  • Delivers age‑appropriate care for the patient population.
Experience
  • One or more years of working in an acute behavioral health hospital program (preferred).
  • Certification as a nurse assistant.
  • Basic computer knowledge (Word and Excel) and skills in rehabilitation‑related systems or other EHR systems (desired).
  • Basic knowledge of electronic medical records (preferred).
Clinical Settings
  • BLS / CPR and other certification as determined by specialty and clinical setting.
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the position.
Education
  • High School Diploma.
  • Two years or more of college (preferred).
Special Qualifications
  • CPI de‑escalation program certification (preferred).
  • Trauma‑informed care training (preferred).
Physical Demands / Working Conditions
  • Walking, standing, and/or stooping for long periods.
  • Mild to moderate physical labor.
  • Exposure to blood, chemicals, and other bodily fluids.
  • Frequent moderate to heavy lifting of 50 lbs or more consistently during the shift.
  • Other physical demands associated with direct patient care for older adults and individuals with physical and cognitive limitations and disabilities.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection‑control policies and protocols.
  • Follows hospital policy when disposing of biohazardous materials, labeling, and handling of all materials.
  • Preserves and protects patient and client confidentiality in all situations and documentation.
  • Can be exposed to unpredictable patient behaviors that may be violent consistent with an acute behavioral health care setting.
