Health and Nutrition Manager – Serving Schools
Salary Range: $21.91 – $24.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Sign‑on incentive of $3,000 available – $500 payable after successful completion of 90 days, $1,000 after 6 months, and $1,500 after one year.
Waldo Community Action Partners (WCAP) seeks a Health and Nutrition Manager for its Early Childhood Program, which serves children and families in Waldo County ages birth through five years old, as well as pregnant mothers. Services are delivered through a home‑visiting model, pre‑K collaborations with area school districts, and centers in Belfast and Searsport. The Health and Nutrition Manager is responsible for organizing and implementing the health, safety, and nutrition content area according to Head Start Performance Standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Health and Nutrition Coordination and Supervision of Children:
- Monitors classrooms to ensure safe and healthy environments in partnership with Site Supervisors.
- Monitors ongoing health status and needs of enrolled children, ensuring completion of health checks, incident reports, medication administration, and implementation of exclusion and readmittance policies.
- Identifies and supports staff and families in meeting 30‑day medical home, dental home, insurance, and immunization mandates, and educates families on importance.
- Obtains hearing and vision screenings for each child within 45 days of enrollment, forwarding results and follow‑up recommendations within 10 days.
- Identifies families lacking required medical/dental screening forms within 90 days of enrollment, works with Family Advocates to assist, and forwards to the Director for potential restriction decisions.
- Works cooperatively with area school nurses and School Nutrition Directors at all collaboration sites.
- In collaboration with the Primary Care Physician, classroom teachers, and parents, develops an Individual Health Plan (IHP) for any child with a health concern that requires treatment or monitoring, and maintains oversight of ongoing IHPs.
- Provides staff with information to distribute to families on nutrition and health‑related issues and communicable disease outbreaks monthly.
- Monitors local health trends and responds appropriately.
- Coordinates with classroom staff to ensure health activities are incorporated into the curriculum, in addition to daily tooth brushing and hand washing.
- Ensures postpartum health visits occur for all enrolled pregnant women.
- Provides consultation and support to Family Service Staff for required health services to all enrolled families, meeting federal and state regulations.
- Coordinates with Nutrition Consultant to ensure dietary needs of children are met and Nutrition Plans are created as needed.
- Conducts heights and weights for all Head Start children within 30 days of enrollment and again in the spring.
- Reports program‑wide BMI percentages in late fall to all families.
- Supplies and Equipment Management:
- Ensures chefs maintain up‑to‑date kitchen supply inventory.
- Coordinates equipment servicing and service contracts as needed.
- Places orders through contracted food and kitchen supply vendors and adheres to procurement procedures.
- Arranges for distribution of food and kitchen supplies to designated sites.
- Records Management:
- Coordinates with the Operations Specialist to capture and enter health and nutrition data.
- Maintains children’s health records in Child Plus to monitor medical and dental data, vision and hearing screenings, immunization status, and follow‑up treatment information.
- Monitors injury reports to ensure child and staff safety.
- Reviews health files monthly and arranges medical and dental follow‑up with staff and families.
- Updates local health resource list for families annually.
- Issues purchase orders and purchases supplies as necessary within the content area.
- Reports health and nutrition information to staff, the Policy Council, and the Board of Directors via monthly reports.
- Ensures achievement of health outcomes and related data.
- Develops monthly menus to meet Head Start Performance Standards and CACFP requirements, with final approval by the Nutrition Consultant.
